Caring for Your Wooden Cutting & Serving Board: Tips for Longevity & Love
At Star Squiggle Hash, every wooden cutting or serving board we create is more than just a kitchen essential — it's a piece of natural art with its own story to tell. Whether you're slicing, serving, or styling, our boards are built to last and designed to be loved. With just a little care, yours will serve you beautifully for years to come.
The Beauty of Imperfection
You might notice a knot here, a small crack there, or a quirky grain pattern that sets your board apart. These natural imperfections aren’t flaws — they’re features. Each board carries the marks of the tree it came from: rings of age, knots of strength, and textures shaped by weather, soil, and time. These are the scars and stories of a life once lived in nature.
We believe these little details make your board truly one of a kind.
Sustainability at the Heart
Most of our boards are made from recycled, reclaimed, or repurposed wood — meaning we’re giving timber a second life rather than sending it to waste. That might be offcuts from local workshops, salvaged hardwoods, or pieces rescued from furniture no longer in use. This makes each board not only unique, but also an environmentally-conscious choice.
Choosing reclaimed wood reduces landfill, lowers demand for new logging, and gives a nod to the past — sometimes your board may even come from wood older than you!
Not Dishwasher Safe (And Why That’s Okay)
It’s tempting to toss your board into the dishwasher — but trust us, it’s not the way to go. The heat and moisture of a dishwasher can warp wood, strip its natural oils, and cause it to crack or split.
Instead, here’s how to show your board a little love:
How to Clean & Care for Your Board
1. Wash Gently, Dry Immediately
Use warm water, a soft sponge, and a mild dish soap. Rinse well and dry straight away with a clean towel — don’t let it soak or sit in water.
2. Disinfect Naturally
For an occasional refresh, rub the surface with half a lemon and a sprinkle of coarse salt. This helps to lift smells and stains naturally while being gentle on the wood.
3. Oil Regularly
Wood loves moisture — just the right kind. To keep your board nourished and protected, rub it down every few weeks with a food-safe mineral oil or a wood conditioning balm. Let it soak in, then wipe off any excess.
4. Store it Right
Keep your board in a dry, cool spot out of direct sunlight. Avoid stacking heavy things on top of it, especially if it has decorative handles or custom engraving.
Your Star Squiggle Hash board was made with care, and with a little TLC, it’ll be a part of your kitchen or grazing table magic for many years to come. Every mark in the grain, every curve in the edge — it’s all part of the story.
Got questions about board care or want to share how you’re using yours? We’d love to hear from you!
